One Between Two

The goal of Evolutionary Enlightenment is the emergence of a miraculous potential that I call “intersubjective nonduality.” What does that mean? “Nonduality” is most commonly used to mean oneness, or not-two-ness. It points to the perennial spiritual revelation that there is no other. And “intersubjective” means between subjects. So “intersubjective nonduality,” to put it simply, means one between two. It means the experience of oneness in a context of relatedness. Usually, we experience other people as being separate, outside of our own experience of subjectivity. Except in rare moments, such as sexual intimacy, it seems as if there is an impenetrable wall between us. But I have discovered that when two or more individuals awaken to the truth of Oneness, in the same place and the same space, the liberating knowledge that there is no other—which is the ground of enlightened awareness—can become a shared experience.When this occurs, we mutually experience a paradox: You appear to be there as a separate individual; I appear to be here as a separate individual; and yet my experience of myself and my experience of you is that we are not two. And this changes everything. Why? Because this is when enlightenment, which is the direct experience of Oneness, breaks out of the purely subjective experience of the individual, and becomes the shared intersubjective context in which relatedness occurs. Miraculously, nonduality is no longer just an abstract idea or even a personal revelation, but becomes the very foundation of the culture between us. To me, this is what enables the power of enlightened awareness to affect real change in the world. The discovery of intersubjective nonduality is nothing less than the ground for creating an enlightened culture.

Compelling Ourselves to Evolve

So much of spiritual development is really about finding ways to creatively compel ourselves, through our own inspired will and intention, to actually evolve. In order to do this, we need to awaken to the direct experience of the evolutionary impulse as well as to illuminate and clarify the subtle and complex relationships between self, culture, and cosmos. What happens when an awakening individual begins to discover different perspectives and levels of freedom and kinds of insight that completely turn his or her world upside down? The evolutionary impulse itself fills us with an exhilarating compulsion to evolve, but that exhilaration is just an experience. To make that thrilling experience of freedom and exhilaration and confidence and conviction manifest, it has to be filtered through our culture. And the worldviews, values, and perspectives that we have been culturally conditioned by don’t usually have room or space for these new kinds of perspectives and insights. So unless we’re able, through very careful, enlightened, and rational thinking, to create new structures in consciousness that can support the emergence of the higher potentials that we feel so inspired by, we might just be lost in an experience. These new potentials won’t be able to manifest themselves as new and higher realities without the evolution of our values and perspectives. So the work at hand is not only to have the experience of awakening to the creative impulse but to ask questions like: How am I thinking about what it means to be me and what it means to live in this world? What is the world? What is culture? What does it mean to be a man or a woman? What does everything actually mean in light of this experience that I’m having?

At the Edge of Unknown Territory

We are at a very delicate and uncharted point in our cultural evolution, and it seems urgent that more and more people take steps forward more quickly. It’s unusual for an individual to realize that he or she is literally at the edge of unknown territory. Most human beings are born and die within a preexistent cultural context that they don’t necessarily feel is up to them to define. But at this particular time in history, for these new integral and evolutionary stages, structures, and potentials to emerge, it requires rare and heroic individuals who are willing to bear the emotional, psychological, philosophical, and spiritual overwhelm of realizing that they have to be real pioneers. Where we’re going now is uncharted territory. More and more people at this edge are working very hard to lay down these new structures, but the truth is that there’s no panel of experts or ascended masters who have already figured this out for us. This is something we’re all working through and need to work through together, with other individuals that have that same pioneering spirit and have awakened to the conviction that this needs to happen and we’re the ones who have to do it. This adds a certain kind of weight, gravitas, and, of course, excitement and thrill to the endeavor of spiritual transformation and evolution at this particular time.

On the Wings of the Authentic Self

The manifest expression of the living God is the felt urge to become—that same original creative impulse behind the first cause that miraculously is beginning to awaken to itself in the light of our own evolved consciousness. This emerging ecstatic compulsion is what I call the Authentic Self, in you and in me. Those of us who earnestly find ourselves compelled by the promise of a new future and a higher context for human life will find an infinite source of energy and inspiration when we discover how to ride on the wings of the Authentic Self. And I firmly believe that this is the only way we can take the next step beyond the postmodern predicament. It is only when we have the actual experience of transcending every trace of fear, self-consciousness, and arrogant self-importance, while fully embodying and embracing the powers of our evolved autonomy and intelligence, that we actually glimpse what’s possible for all of us right now.

Like a Candle in the Dark

When you awaken to the eternal nature of the Ground of all Being, you find that there is something miraculously and mysteriously compelling about it. It’s like staring at a candle in a dark night—you find yourself mesmerized by something that is unchanging yet infinitely compelling. You feel that you are being drawn into something that you can’t rationally understand but that your heart or your soul understands completely. You’re being drawn into it, and as you are drawn into it, the only thing you experience as being real is the eternal or timeless nature of Being Itself. You find yourself in a state of rapture. Why? Simply because a deeper part of yourself has been released from your ego’s endless fears and concerns, and drawn out of the time process altogether.

Shifting Our Core Values

No matter what new, thrilling potentials any one of us may glimpse in a higher state of consciousness, unless our core values shift in a significant way as a result of what we have seen, the future that we want to create together will never appear. Our core values are pictures or images that we hold in the eye of our mind that define for us what life is supposed to look like. These pictures are both conscious and unconscious and there is an enormous amount of emotion associated with these images and with what they represent to us on many levels. The most challenging dimension of higher or vertical spiritual development lies in the evolution of our value spheres. It is not very difficult, given the right circumstances, to enter higher states of consciousness and in those higher states to glimpse the exciting and extraordinary potentials that await us on the other side of our usually rigid and fixed way of perceiving the way things are.

But unless our deeply held and not-so-conscious value spheres have been brought into the light of awareness and penetrated with the eye of contemplation, we will never be able to actualize those potentials in real time. If we are passionately committed to the evolution of consciousness and culture, we must ensure at all costs that our conscious and unconscious shared values become an unambiguous expression of our deepest insights. Unless this is the case, the very best part of each and every one of us, the spiritual impulse, our own Authentic Self, will inadvertently be stunted in its ability to affect any significant change in our world.

Infinite Potential

It’s very important to understand that everything that exists—the whole universe, including each and every one of us, is a manifest or material expression of that which does not exist. From nothing came something. The unmanifest became the manifest. From emptiness, from the void, this whole material universe, which eventually gave rise to life, emerged. So everything that exists came from nothing. Nothing is the source of everything that is. That which became everything is that nonmaterial spiritual essence. That’s what you can experience in a deep state of meditation. The fundamental mystical insight throughout the ages is basically this: that the ultimate essence of everything that exists is this no-thing-ness. But when seen from this evolutionary perspective, what you become aware of is that the nothingness is not nothing. Why? Because in the absolute emptiness prior to the big bang there was still the infinite potential for everything that would be created. Everything was possible but nothing had happened yet. So even in complete emptiness, there is some kind of positive creative tension that is experienced in meditation as a suspended state of absolute awakeness. This quiet tension exists in consciousness because everything is possible but nothing has yet occurred. There is a vibration of empty fullness that is enthralling. And what we’re very interested in, in the teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment, is locating that same vibration within our very own self—the same energy, the same intelligence that initiated the entire creative process at the very beginning.

The Secret of Freedom

Under the right circumstances, it is not difficult to have a powerful experience of meditation, to taste the indescribable peace, bliss, rapture, and stillness of the Ground of Being—like a still forest pool, in which you sink ever more deeply, where your mind is not moving at all. It is very important to taste the inherent liberation of your own infinite depth, but that kind of experience in and of itself will not necessarily teach you how to have a liberated relationship to the chaos of your own mind and emotions. Sinking to the depths of your own self is always profoundly inspiring, but it’s not enough. It is equally important to know how to stay on the surface when a storm is raging and have no relationship to the chaos. And that is what the deliberate practice of meditation is all about. For most of us, learning to do that is ultimately a source of greater confidence and soul strength than the spontaneous experience of infinite depth. And in fact, from an absolute or nondual perspective, being at the surface is no different from being at the very bottom of the pool. Even if it doesn’t necessarily feel that way, in time you will come to understand that it is the same. That is the secret of freedom.

A Higher We

Evolutionary Enlightenment is about a collective emergence, not merely an individual attainment. This is why I think it has more potential than traditional enlightenment to effect cultural transformation at the leading edge, but it’s more challenging because people have to cooperate with each other. And that seems to be the real human predicament. How do you get people to cooperate with each other? A bold or even heroic man or woman, a rare individual, will find a way to evolve, but as long as the individual does this on his or her own terms, by him- or herself, WE aren’t going to get anywhere. So the challenge is: How do we do this together? It’s when we can move forward together that something big starts happening, and the implications for the leading edge of cultural development are very profound.

This is the age of the individual. And we’re not doing too well as a result of the fact that we have all grown up in a cultural climate of narcissism and materialism that has taught us to think far too much about number one. So this teaching is very much about the leap from the I to the We. But it’s not a We in which the autonomy of the individual is sacrificed in any way. Usually an autonomous and creative individual has to remove him- or herself from the experience of communion with others in order to be able to freely express his or her creative potential. But in this higher We that I am speaking about, two seemingly contradictory things happen simultaneously. The creative autonomy of the individual is released and empowered like never before, and at the very same time, because the ego boundaries have fallen away between people, there is suddenly no sense of the usual gap that separates one from the other. The one and the many seamlessly merge, and yet paradoxically they don’t become indistinct. I am convinced that this is what our next step is. When any one of us looks at our personal predicament in a larger cultural context, we begin to recognize the need for more and more of us to go beyond our pathological individualism in such a way that we are actually going to be able to merge in a higher We, a nondual creative unity—not just as a spiritual state but as a normal way of being—so that new, truly autonomous men and women and as-yet-unrealized cultural potentials can emerge at the leading edge.
