One Between Two

The goal of Evolutionary Enlightenment is the emergence of a miraculous potential that I call “intersubjective nonduality.” What does that mean? “Nonduality” is most commonly used to mean oneness, or not-two-ness. It points to the perennial spiritual revelation that there is no other. And “intersubjective” means between subjects. So “intersubjective nonduality,” to put it simply, means one between two. It means the experience of oneness in a context of relatedness. Usually, we experience other people as being separate, outside of our own experience of subjectivity. Except in rare moments, such as sexual intimacy, it seems as if there is an impenetrable wall between us. But I have discovered that when two or more individuals awaken to the truth of Oneness, in the same place and the same space, the liberating knowledge that there is no other—which is the ground of enlightened awareness—can become a shared experience.When this occurs, we mutually experience a paradox: You appear to be there as a separate individual; I appear to be here as a separate individual; and yet my experience of myself and my experience of you is that we are not two. And this changes everything. Why? Because this is when enlightenment, which is the direct experience of Oneness, breaks out of the purely subjective experience of the individual, and becomes the shared intersubjective context in which relatedness occurs. Miraculously, nonduality is no longer just an abstract idea or even a personal revelation, but becomes the very foundation of the culture between us. To me, this is what enables the power of enlightened awareness to affect real change in the world. The discovery of intersubjective nonduality is nothing less than the ground for creating an enlightened culture.

An Evolutionary Posture

I believe that the creative impulse behind the evolving universe is, by its very nature, a drive toward perfection. But paradoxically, it is important to understand that perfection can never be realized in the manifest world. You are never going to reach perfection; I’m never going to reach perfection. It’s just not possible. Before anything happened, before something burst out of nothing, we could say there was perfection. Perfection exists in the unborn, unmanifest, unbecome state or place, which is the ground of all Being, in every moment. But the minute that leap was taken from formlessness to form, perfection was left behind. The whole creative process can be understood as the eternal striving for perfection that can never be reached. The entire Kosmos is endlessly reaching toward perfection but destined never to get there. As I teach it, the perfect posture to be assumed by the individual who wants to develop is this: We would strive to manifest that relationship to life in which we are always reaching for perfection, while knowing that we are never going to reach it. What a paradox! Why would you strive to reach something that you could never possibly reach? Because that puts you in the best possible position to evolve.

Cuando un ser humano empieza a despertar a la perspectiva cósmica de lo que se llama “el tiempo profundo,” siempre es nada menos que una revelación espiritual. Esto ocurre cuando el yo vislumbra su propia naturaleza como producto de un proceso evolutivo que ocurre a diferentes niveles simultáneamente – cosmológica, planetaria, cultural, biológica, psicoemocional y espiritualmente.

The God of the Future

When a human being awakens to the cosmic perspective of what’s called “deep time,” it is always nothing short of a spiritual revelation. This occurs when the self directly glimpses its own nature as the product of a developmental process that is occurring on many levels simultaneously—cosmological, planetary, cultural, biological, psycho-emotional, and spiritual.

It was my own gradual discovery of and awakening to this perspective that eventually compelled me to reinterpret and redefine the meaning and significance of enlightenment for our own time. The first step in this awakening was seeing through what appeared to be my own personal experience and discovering that it was actually a very small part of a vast impersonal process. The second step was recognizing that the process itself is evolving on multiple levels, in and through time. It was then that I saw that the primordial urge to become is the new and emerging face of the eternal God. I began to understand that the evolutionary impulse, God as Eros, is the God of the future.
