The Energy of Consciousness

Consciousness, in manifestation, has its own energy. And when we feel the unique energy of consciousness powerfully and palpably, we have spiritual experiences. Consciousness is not inert or passive but active. We discover this for ourselves when we recognize that consciousness is always mysteriously seeking for itself, when we become aware of the pulsation of that subtle impulse within us that is spiritual yearning. I’m speaking about the tug of the heart from the deepest part of the Self. That tug is the felt urge towards the mystery of consciousness. It is the drive towards transcendence and spiritual freedom. It’s the mystical pulsation that arises from our own interiors, compelling us to seek our own salvation. The energy of consciousness is the experience of overwhelming fullness, lightness of being, a spiritual ecstasy that reaches toward infinity, a fearless transparency that knows no other, and an indestructible throbbing buoyancy that is the very essence of what life is.

God Depends on You!

I can’t think of a more pertinent spiritual revelation or transformative message for any seeker, especially for us narcissistic, self-concerned postmoderns, than this one: God depends on you! After all, how else could we ever truly liberate ourselves from the all-consuming distraction of our own culturally conditioned egotism and selfishness than through the overpowering recognition that without our personal cooperation and participation that which is highest will not be able to enter into this world?

At the Edge of Unknown Territory

We are at a very delicate and uncharted point in our cultural evolution, and it seems urgent that more and more people take steps forward more quickly. It’s unusual for an individual to realize that he or she is literally at the edge of unknown territory. Most human beings are born and die within a preexistent cultural context that they don’t necessarily feel is up to them to define. But at this particular time in history, for these new integral and evolutionary stages, structures, and potentials to emerge, it requires rare and heroic individuals who are willing to bear the emotional, psychological, philosophical, and spiritual overwhelm of realizing that they have to be real pioneers. Where we’re going now is uncharted territory. More and more people at this edge are working very hard to lay down these new structures, but the truth is that there’s no panel of experts or ascended masters who have already figured this out for us. This is something we’re all working through and need to work through together, with other individuals that have that same pioneering spirit and have awakened to the conviction that this needs to happen and we’re the ones who have to do it. This adds a certain kind of weight, gravitas, and, of course, excitement and thrill to the endeavor of spiritual transformation and evolution at this particular time.

Interpreting the Spiritual Impulse

When trying to understand how consciousness evolves, in us as individuals and through us as culture, it’s important to appreciate the fact that the way in which our experience is perceived, understood, and interpreted is always through the filter of our own cultural and religious worldview. So the way any one of us interprets the pulsation of the spiritual impulse in our own heart and mind is directly related to both our stage of development and to our station in culture. The epic journey through evolving interpretations of this same impulse is amazing to behold: from shamanism to paganism to monotheism to higher forms of nondual mysticism—from the worship of nature spirits to the worship of many gods to the worship of the one and only God to the direct awakening to God as Spirit Itself. This is the story of how our capacity for spiritual depth and cognition has slowly developed, and it is one way to understand the evolution of consciousness. We can literally witness how our perspective grows in depth and inclusiveness, as our interpretation of the Absolute takes the leap from God as spirit in nature to God as embodied superhero to God as the mythic father figure in the sky, and from there, ultimately, to the mystical realization of the transcendent oneness of consciousness itself.

Making Deep Sense

In the twenty-first century, for those of us at the leading edge who are spiritually inclined, it is difficult to find a path, practice, or way that makes deep sense. It’s challenging to find a truly contemporary spiritual orientation that doesn’t compel us either to embrace ancient belief structures that just no longer seem appropriate or to subscribe to New Age spiritual notions that seem to be based upon far-fetched or irrational suppositions about the nature of reality, God, or the cosmos. We as postmodern seekers are in a unique predicament, but it’s a predicament that couldn’t be more thrilling because it is so pregnant with creative potential. I’m speaking about all of us who want to catalyze a revolution in consciousness and culture that will truly make it possible to create something new from the ground up. In order to do this, I believe we need to not only free ourselves from the burden of having to bridge the gap between the mythical past and rational present but we also need to, together, formulate an entirely new context for our individual and collective spiritual development that is completely appropriate for our own time and twenty-first-century circumstances. I believe such a perspective would have to be based upon the most important historical, cultural, and spiritual discovery of the last three hundred years: evolution.

Like a Candle in the Dark

When you awaken to the eternal nature of the Ground of all Being, you find that there is something miraculously and mysteriously compelling about it. It’s like staring at a candle in a dark night—you find yourself mesmerized by something that is unchanging yet infinitely compelling. You feel that you are being drawn into something that you can’t rationally understand but that your heart or your soul understands completely. You’re being drawn into it, and as you are drawn into it, the only thing you experience as being real is the eternal or timeless nature of Being Itself. You find yourself in a state of rapture. Why? Simply because a deeper part of yourself has been released from your ego’s endless fears and concerns, and drawn out of the time process altogether.

Cosmic Responsibility

Over the two decades that I’ve been teaching, I have not met one person who found the will and the emotional strength and conviction to evolve at the deepest level until they had really awakened to the enormity of our collective evolutionary predicament. A New Heaven

I believe that it is in the new terrain of collective or intersubjective enlightenment, where the bliss of boundariless consciousness beyond ego meets the surging ecstasy of the creative impulse, that a new expression of heaven appears at the leading edge of human awareness. When our extreme narcissism has been transcended, when highly developed individuation is no longer a prison for the self but has now become a finely tuned vehicle through which the blazing light of the Authentic Self shines into this world, heaven has come to earth. When the full flowering of the creative potential of each and every individual unfolds within a limitless sea of screaming unity, heaven has come to earth. When the palpable presence of infinity is the ground that is being shared, and human relatedness is now based upon the inspired recognition of our mutual responsibility to create the future, heaven has indeed come to earth.

Beyond the Mind

From the perspective of the rational mind, a human life is a linear, limited event, defined by the movement of time. But when you penetrate beyond the mind through the serious practice of meditation, you get glimpses into a mystery that transcends time in an instant. You begin to directly see, know, and feel that instead of merely being an individual body, mind, and personality that was born and is going to die, the deepest part of you is the empty Ground of Being that has never become anything. The degree to which you have realized that who you are at the deepest level is that timeless, spaceless ground will reveal itself in how much spontaneous freedom you are able to manifest through your human personality, in time and space. If your meditation is powerful and profound, then the way you relate to life will constantly demonstrate a freedom that extends far beyond the fears and desires of your own ego. Your very being will become a portal for that primordial depth that transcends life and death.

Freely Choosing to be Yourself

Our values are what define the choices we make, the actions we take, the life that we create. They are a set of subtle and not so subtle beliefs, ideas, and ways of seeing the world that we deeply subscribe to but may not even be conscious of. And if we’re not conscious of the values of the conditioned self, they are going to inhibit our capacity to be truly awake. So it’s imperative, if you want to be an agent of conscious evolution, to bring the light of awareness to this level of your self. What are your deeply held values? Are they your values? Did you freely choose them? Probably not. Very few people freely choose their own values. Many of us who have grown up in a postmodern world where the freedom of individual is valued above all else assume that we have freely chosen our values, but it’s very rarely true. So this is why the culturally conditioned self is a subject in all of us that needs to be made an object in the light of our own awareness, so that we will be in a position to begin to freely choose who we will be. We have to, in a sense, die and be reborn again. This is what rigorous and serious spiritual practice is all about: learning how to freely choose to be yourself.

Infinite Potential

It’s very important to understand that everything that exists—the whole universe, including each and every one of us, is a manifest or material expression of that which does not exist. From nothing came something. The unmanifest became the manifest. From emptiness, from the void, this whole material universe, which eventually gave rise to life, emerged. So everything that exists came from nothing. Nothing is the source of everything that is. That which became everything is that nonmaterial spiritual essence. That’s what you can experience in a deep state of meditation. The fundamental mystical insight throughout the ages is basically this: that the ultimate essence of everything that exists is this no-thing-ness. But when seen from this evolutionary perspective, what you become aware of is that the nothingness is not nothing. Why? Because in the absolute emptiness prior to the big bang there was still the infinite potential for everything that would be created. Everything was possible but nothing had happened yet. So even in complete emptiness, there is some kind of positive creative tension that is experienced in meditation as a suspended state of absolute awakeness. This quiet tension exists in consciousness because everything is possible but nothing has yet occurred. There is a vibration of empty fullness that is enthralling. And what we’re very interested in, in the teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment, is locating that same vibration within our very own self—the same energy, the same intelligence that initiated the entire creative process at the very beginning.

Changing the World from the Inside Out

Nowadays, with the advent of global warming and the palpable fear of conflict and upheaval, we have become focused on the question of survival. Most of us are concerned with figuring out how we are going to make it through the tremendous challenges that are facing us. And all things considered, this makes sense. But there is an enormous difference between being concerned with how I or we are going to survive and thinking seriously about how I or we are going to actually evolve at the deepest level. Survival and evolution are not necessarily the same thing. It’s easy to experience concern about our survival, but to experience the urgency about the necessity for higher development that is felt in the deepest part of ourselves, in the soul, is another matter altogether. Wanting to evolve at the level of consciousness is not merely wanting to survive—it is experiencing a spiritually motivated need for vertical development to occur on an individual and collective level in such a way that the world as we know it changes dramatically from the inside out.

The Purpose of Spiritual Experience

Ideally, our orientation to life should change as a result of deep spiritual experience. Whenever we transcend the fears and desires of the individual and collective ego, we discover a completely different perspective on what it means to be a human being—a perspective that transcends the ego’s narrow, limited, personal world. And that is really what is so important about the discovery of higher and deeper states of consciousness. Once we have tasted higher states, and are convinced that they’re real, sooner or later a point has to come when we realize that now our spiritual practice is no longer merely about trying to have more spiritual experiences; it is about acting upon what has been revealed to us in the experiences we have already had. That is when our own awakening becomes the limitless foundation that empowers us to take responsibility for creating the future—which is the whole point of evolutionary enlightenment.
