A Higher We

Evolutionary Enlightenment is about a collective emergence, not merely an individual attainment. This is why I think it has more potential than traditional enlightenment to effect cultural transformation at the leading edge, but it’s more challenging because people have to cooperate with each other. And that seems to be the real human predicament. How do you get people to cooperate with each other? A bold or even heroic man or woman, a rare individual, will find a way to evolve, but as long as the individual does this on his or her own terms, by him- or herself, WE aren’t going to get anywhere. So the challenge is: How do we do this together? It’s when we can move forward together that something big starts happening, and the implications for the leading edge of cultural development are very profound.

This is the age of the individual. And we’re not doing too well as a result of the fact that we have all grown up in a cultural climate of narcissism and materialism that has taught us to think far too much about number one. So this teaching is very much about the leap from the I to the We. But it’s not a We in which the autonomy of the individual is sacrificed in any way. Usually an autonomous and creative individual has to remove him- or herself from the experience of communion with others in order to be able to freely express his or her creative potential. But in this higher We that I am speaking about, two seemingly contradictory things happen simultaneously. The creative autonomy of the individual is released and empowered like never before, and at the very same time, because the ego boundaries have fallen away between people, there is suddenly no sense of the usual gap that separates one from the other. The one and the many seamlessly merge, and yet paradoxically they don’t become indistinct. I am convinced that this is what our next step is. When any one of us looks at our personal predicament in a larger cultural context, we begin to recognize the need for more and more of us to go beyond our pathological individualism in such a way that we are actually going to be able to merge in a higher We, a nondual creative unity—not just as a spiritual state but as a normal way of being—so that new, truly autonomous men and women and as-yet-unrealized cultural potentials can emerge at the leading edge.

Changing the World from the Inside Out

Nowadays, with the advent of global warming and the palpable fear of conflict and upheaval, we have become focused on the question of survival. Most of us are concerned with figuring out how we are going to make it through the tremendous challenges that are facing us. And all things considered, this makes sense. But there is an enormous difference between being concerned with how I or we are going to survive and thinking seriously about how I or we are going to actually evolve at the deepest level. Survival and evolution are not necessarily the same thing. It’s easy to experience concern about our survival, but to experience the urgency about the necessity for higher development that is felt in the deepest part of ourselves, in the soul, is another matter altogether. Wanting to evolve at the level of consciousness is not merely wanting to survive—it is experiencing a spiritually motivated need for vertical development to occur on an individual and collective level in such a way that the world as we know it changes dramatically from the inside out.

One of the most difficult but important things to understand, if one aspires for enlightenment, is that freedom is not a feeling. Freedom is not any particular experience, no matter how profound the experience may be. Freedom is not peace; freedom is not joy; freedom is not ecstasy. Peace, joy, and ecstasy feel free, but that is just a feeling of freedom; it is not freedom itself. A person who is not free can have an experience of sinking into the peace, joy, and ecstasy of the ground of being and feel during that experience as if they are free. But that doesn’t mean they are actually a liberated human being. And on the other hand, a person who is free may experience pain, fear, frustration, confusion, or anxiety, and not lose their freedom. All experience comes and goes. The feeling quality of your own experience will always be changing, and all the more so if you live a deeply engaged and committed life. So if you want to be a liberated human being, that liberation is dependent only upon the position that you are taking in relationship to your experience; it’s not dependent upon the quality or the content of the experience itself.

The Purpose of Spiritual Experience

Ideally, our orientation to life should change as a result of deep spiritual experience. Whenever we transcend the fears and desires of the individual and collective ego, we discover a completely different perspective on what it means to be a human being—a perspective that transcends the ego’s narrow, limited, personal world. And that is really what is so important about the discovery of higher and deeper states of consciousness. Once we have tasted higher states, and are convinced that they’re real, sooner or later a point has to come when we realize that now our spiritual practice is no longer merely about trying to have more spiritual experiences; it is about acting upon what has been revealed to us in the experiences we have already had. That is when our own awakening becomes the limitless foundation that empowers us to take responsibility for creating the future—which is the whole point of evolutionary enlightenment.

The Art and Science of Enlightened Communication

What is the most authentic way to be with other people? What is an authentic way for us to truly communicate? Too often, what we share with others is filtered through pretense and self-image. And pretense is ego. So if we are interested in the evolution of consciousness, and more importantly, in how higher spiritual development translates into action, into real life, the matter of authentic communication—beyond the endless pretense of the ego—becomes very important. Learning how to be authentically who you are, which means not merely trying to project an image, is the foundation for coming together with others in a way that expresses the egoless passion of enlightened consciousness. This unique form of communication that I’m describing does not only spontaneously result from being catapulted into a higher state of consciousness—it is a spiritual art and science that can also be learned. It is a new higher form of communication that must be practiced by all committed individuals who strive to come together beyond ego for the sake of the evolution of consciousness and culture.

A very big picture

For too many of us, the spiritual path is only about the drama of the separate self—our personal hopes and fears, highs and lows, triumphs and failures. And that’s understandable, but sooner or later, we have to realize that that’s simply not the point. In an evolutionary context, the personal dimension of our own experience is just a very small part of a very big picture, and the real point is always the evolution of the process itself.

In that context, how much time does any one of us have to get over our immaturity and relentless self-concern and step forward? From a merely personal perspective it will always seem like we have all the time in the world to struggle with our ambivalence and selfishness, to choose to live up to our highest potential or not. But from an impersonal, evolutionary perspective we never have more time, because the situation is always urgent. Whenever we allow ourselves to get stuck in a personal crisis, the real loser is God, not us.

The creative edge.

Truly creative people are always pushing the edge. If you see very talented musicians lost in spontaneous improvisation, they’ll often tell you that in that state something comes over them. There’s a certain place they describe out of which all authentic creativity springs—a mysterious point between the present and future, where a deeper current is flowing. This place is alive with the thrill of the unknown, full of risk and insecurity. It’s the very point where something comes from nothing.

In order to create something new, a risk has to be taken, a leap beyond the known. And the thrill of that creative leap is a very impersonal human experience. Great artists, writers, musicians, scientists, engineers, athletes and many others all experience this same thrill. We find that we feel most alive, most liberated, when we’re expressing our own creativity, pushing the edge in the right way for the right reasons. This potential for creativity seems to be an inherent part of the human capacity. The creative process is an evolutionary process. When you experience the creative impulse awakening in your self, it’s no different than the original impulse that became the whole universe. It’s nothing less that the Big Bang itself, working in you and through you. That’s why it is always so thrilling.

Now, it is one thing to take the risk to leap beyond the known in music, art, writing—in any kind of temporary process where we are creating something. But in an evolutionary context, we want to aspire to a relationship to life itself that would be constantly creative. I’m not just talking about creativity with a canvas or with a musical instrument. I’m talking about creativity with our own souls. It’s much more challenging. There’s no time out. You can’t put the brush or the instrument down and go back to your safe, secure, ordinary life. Living like this requires a radical letting go and a kind of care that few people dare to even consider. It means perpetually living right on the cutting edge of the life process—where the flowering of spirit as evolution is occurring in every moment. It’s ultimate creativity of self in a total response to life.

Transcending Narcissism

Narcissism is the postmodern psychological disease. It basically means we see life and all of our experience through the prism of the separate ego. The way narcissism works is that the event of experience itself automatically creates, at a subtle level, the sense of being special—any experience at all. The experience itself, whatever it may be, is not a problem—the problem is what the ego does with it. Around very intense experiences, the identification with and focus upon the separate self-sense becomes exaggerated. For example, when we experience pleasure or pain, desire or fear, the feeling of being a unique, separate individual becomes accentuated to a very profound degree as we withdraw into that isolated, alienated sense of self.

Why do we feel special when we suffer? I’m not saying suffering isn’t very unpleasant and deeply challenging. But I’m just saying that we tend to feel special when we suffer. In a similar way, we tend to feel special when we experience pleasure or happiness. That’s what the ego does. Is it possible to experience pain without feeling special? Is it possible to experience pleasure without feeling special? The truth is that there is only one human experience, and you are having that experience right now. It’s a singular event; it’s one process unfolding. When we make ourselves special, we create an illusory wall between ourselves and the rest of life. But when we break this compulsive habit, liberation is found in the recognition that whatever any one of us is experiencing is simply an impersonal expression of the vast field of our universal human potential.

The Process Is You

Evolutionary philosophy and evolutionary spirituality are based upon the recognition that we are part of a miraculous process that has existed and been developing for billions of years. It reveals to us that our own personal experience of that process in all its many dimensions—inner and outer, gross and subtle—is only a very small part of an infinite unfolding. Thoughts and feelings that arise in individual consciousness reflect emotional and psychological structures, or habits, that have slowly developed over tens of thousands of years.

Some people, when they hear the word process, interpret it as meaning something inhuman. But it’s actually quite the opposite. I’m not referring to a process in a flat, mechanical, materialistic sense. This process is alive. And it’s you. The process is you. Indeed, what is so important about this shift of perspective is that you begin to see your own sense of self as part of a vast unfolding stream of development. Your understanding of what it means to be human expands almost infinitely, because you start to see your own humanity and your own potential for greater humanity as a result of this process, and an inherent part of this process—and as far as we know, the highest expression of this process. In this way, evolutionary spirituality enhances and enlarges to almost infinite proportions your sense of the significance of what it means to be human.

Always Now

The ego will always insist that it needs more time. But if your intention to evolve, to become enlightened, is more important to you than anything else, you won’t need time. If there is integrity in your spiritual aspirations, you will be ready now. Good intentions for the future only flatter the ego. When you’re serious, the time is always now. Unless you intend to do it now, you won’t do it. Evolutionary Enlightenment—which is the experience of consciousness beyond ego in a developmental context—only emerges when now is the only time that means anything to you.

The energy and intelligence that initiated the creative process is not really concerned with your personal struggle or my personal struggle. That impulse, which is your own authentic self, is only interested in your availability. When you become available, that energy starts surging through you. When enough channels within you are no longer clogged up with the ego’s personal fears and desires, the energy of the authentic self will become the driving force in your being. It’s a very impersonal process.

Be Ready Now

A lot of us feel, “I’m not ready yet.” But if we stand back a little, we see that this is actually a ludicrous position to take, because life is already happening and we’re already in the middle of it. So we are claiming to not be ready for something that is already happening! The ego or separate self sense is very good at creating this illusion that “not being ready yet” somehow makes sense. But it doesn’t really make sense at all. It’s actually a willful choice we make just to avoid having to deal with reality, because reality can be quite overwhelming. And that’s just the way it is. Life is big, it’s intense, and the more courage you have to look into what it’s really all about, the bigger and more intense it becomes. But when you awaken to the Authentic Self and begin to experience a passionate sense of care about the evolution of consciousness and culture, you become less concerned with how your ego feels and more concerned with engaging with reality in the fullest way possible. Indeed, it becomes imperative that you find a way to bear the intensity of your own life, while always being ready now to shoulder the ever-more-overwhelming burden of moving the evolutionary process forward.

Emotionaly rational

If the notion of spiritual evolution is something we are deeply compelled by, we have to learn to understand the differences between the ego and the authentic self at a level that is not merely cognitive. These distinctions are not that difficult to make intellectually, but the real issue is emotional. Inherent in the fears and desires of the ego is a kind of emotional intensity that easily overwhelms our discriminatory faculties and usually obscures our capacity for rationality and objectivity.The ego is full of conviction. It is self-righteous and passionate about the inherent reality and validity of its perspective and its view—even when it contradicts that which the rational mind understands.It is this irrational emotional intensity that makes it almost impossible to see and choose beyond the ego’s fears and desires. So the evolutionary step that needs to be taken is from the emotionally irrational condition of the ego to one in which, because we have awakened to the authentic self and transcended ego to a significant degree, we are able to be emotionally rational—not necessarily in the way that we feel but in our actions and in our responses.

For spiritual evolution to occur, we need to unify our highest philosophical and intellectual convictions with our emotional relationship to life.

Es importante recordar que la evolución no es algo que simplemente sucede. The Essence of the Spiritual Endeavor

It’s important to remember that evolution isn’t just happening. We are a very big part of that process, and when you really get this, the liberation of your power of choice becomes the very essence of the spiritual endeavor. You realize that the more awake you become, the more enlightened you become, the more responsible you are for our future, and the more profoundly significant become the choices that you make, because they become an expression of the evolutionary principle in action. Ask yourself, Whose hands are these? If you are primarily identified with ego, they are the hands of the ego. But if your purpose has become aligned with the creative principle itself, your hands become God’s hands. As audacious as that sounds, it’s actually true.
