You, Whoever You Are

People often ask me, What is the self? What is it that actually evolves? And I always answer, It’s you, whoever you are. I don’t just mean your ego or personality. But what I’m pointing to is the fact that beneath all of that there is some essential core of selfhood or agency that is making choices. If you want to become an evolutionarily enlightened human being, your ability to succeed depends upon accepting the simple fact that you are the one who is making the choices. You are the chooser. That sounds like a simple statement, but it’s amazing how many intelligent people will deny it. If you look honestly for yourself, however, you will see that it is true: You are always choosing. Maybe you are not always conscious of this fact, but every time you act or react, at some level a choice is being made. And you, whoever you are, are the one who is making it. Who else could it be?

You Are Culture

You are not just an individual. You are culture incarnate. As an evolving self, you are the manifestation of a collective conditioned way of seeing and responding to life. This is why your conscious evolution matters so much. When you, as an individual, start using your own will to activate higher potentials within yourself, in a small but not insignificant way cultural evolution starts happening through you.
A momentum is generated—a vertical momentum toward that which is new. And when the individual feels that momentum, it’s experienced as liberation. Most of us live in what I call a horizontal plane—an emotional and psychological and cultural worldspace that is made up only of what has already happened and what already exists. We rarely, if ever, experience true verticality, which is the rising up and emergence of that which is new. So when vertical momentum is generated, you realize that you are going somewhere at the level of consciousness. And it’s not just you; to some degree, culture itself is moving through you. When you know that’s possible and you experience it directly, it’s like someone has given you the key that unlocks the door to the future.

Busca hasta que encuentres

Seek Until You Find

You must seek until you find. Only when you find what you have been looking for will you be able to truly stop seeking. Better not to stop seeking energetically until then. It is imperative that you do not stop seeking until you reach the goal of Enlightenment. Do not allow yourself to stop until you’ve come to the absolute end of all seeking. Only when you have come home forever and you know without any doubt that it is all over should you allow yourself to stop.

One Between Two

The goal of Evolutionary Enlightenment is the emergence of a miraculous potential that I call “intersubjective nonduality.” What does that mean? “Nonduality” is most commonly used to mean oneness, or not-two-ness. It points to the perennial spiritual revelation that there is no other. And “intersubjective” means between subjects. So “intersubjective nonduality,” to put it simply, means one between two. It means the experience of oneness in a context of relatedness. Usually, we experience other people as being separate, outside of our own experience of subjectivity. Except in rare moments, such as sexual intimacy, it seems as if there is an impenetrable wall between us. But I have discovered that when two or more individuals awaken to the truth of Oneness, in the same place and the same space, the liberating knowledge that there is no other—which is the ground of enlightened awareness—can become a shared experience.When this occurs, we mutually experience a paradox: You appear to be there as a separate individual; I appear to be here as a separate individual; and yet my experience of myself and my experience of you is that we are not two. And this changes everything. Why? Because this is when enlightenment, which is the direct experience of Oneness, breaks out of the purely subjective experience of the individual, and becomes the shared intersubjective context in which relatedness occurs. Miraculously, nonduality is no longer just an abstract idea or even a personal revelation, but becomes the very foundation of the culture between us. To me, this is what enables the power of enlightened awareness to affect real change in the world. The discovery of intersubjective nonduality is nothing less than the ground for creating an enlightened culture.
