The Only Way to Experience Unparalleled Freedom

The traditional notion of enlightenment was all about winning release—profound existential release from the world and the time process. And that release occurs when you begin focus on the Ground of your own Being, on the nature of consciousness itself, free from any identification with time or any objects. As that happens, you sink deeper and deeper, until you find yourself in an ocean of timelessness. And when you find yourself in this ocean of timelessness, if you have the courage to stay very awake, what happens is that the sense of time ultimately disappears altogether. And that’s the only place and the only way to experience unparalleled and perfect freedom, because it is only in that mysterious place that exists before time began, before the universe was created, that perfection exists. The only thing that is perfect is that empty ground, because nothing has happened there yet—the world has not been created, no mistakes have been made, and no chaos or confusion could possibly arise, because nothing has ever happened. That is why, when you enter into this timeless depth, you will have the experience of rapture and absolute release. It’s a natural result of recognizing the inherently already perfect nature of that empty ground.

An Essential Conviction

The foundation of any authentic path to higher development must, in the end, be based upon a deep conviction in one’s own capacity to consciously evolve and a commitment to ensuring that it will occur. Penetrating into the deeper and higher dimensions of our own being is not an impossible feat that only spiritually gifted people can accomplish. It just requires an authentic personally felt compulsion to find something bigger, deeper, higher, and infinitely more real than anything one has ever known. And above all, it requires that one make room for the possibility that one can actually succeed, at the deepest level of one’s being, in becoming that something which one cannot yet grasp but feels choicelessly compelled to reach for.

 Compelled to Evolve

These days, just about everyone is aware of the fact that we’re in what many consider to be a global crisis. We know we are going to have to make sacrifices for the sake of our collective survival. And historically, human beings have proved that we can do this, that we can come together when we’re threatened by a common enemy or a common crisis. But the question I’m interested in is, can we come together to evolve? What has yet to happen, as far as I can see, is for human beings to be compelled to come together to create the future, to make the world a better and more enlightened place—not spurred on by crises or fear but inspired by the love of truth, the love of God, for the sake of the evolutionary impulse itself. That hasn’t happened yet. It’s an important thing for people to think about. Often people think that responding to problems and crises is evolution. But I say, well, not necessarily. Evolution really means a moving forward, a creation of something new, not just a restoration of peace and a return to the way things were. Of course, conflict can and often does compel us to find new ways to move forward creatively and practically, and that’s good. But that’s different than what it means to evolve for its own sake, which is the highest motive there is.

Two Steps to an Integral Enlightenment

Andrew Cohen: In the right circumstances, an individual can awaken to a higher state of consciousness and a bigger, deeper, more comprehensive, and more inclusive worldview that is absolutely liberating and inspiring and gives so much confidence. But then the interesting and important question is: How can they make that new deeper and higher recognition their own? There’s a delicate process that happens where individuals can see, recognize, and understand many of these things, and yet unless it’s consciously pursued, it’s very easy for them to fall back to cognitive structures, values, and perspectives that they were holding, both consciously and unconsciously, before they awakened to higher and deeper evolutionary and integral values and perspectives. So the most tricky and delicate part of this process is really about learning how to traverse this territory oneself, to make these bold steps forward with one’s own consciousness, with one’s own cognition, with one’s very own soul.

Ken Wilber: There are, in a sense, two delicate steps toward a fully integral approach to realization and enlightenment and consciousness. One is getting unstuck from the pluralistic postmodern worldview. The second is that once you understand the integral stage theoretically, then you have to embody it, you have to awaken to it, you have to make it a genuine realization in your own being. And that generally takes practice, in a spiritual community. This is one of the reasons we call these dialogues that you and I have been having over the years “The Guru and the Pandit.” I have represented the pandit position and raised the theoretical issues and many of the academic issues that need to be raised—hopefully not in a dry, dull sense but in a way that’s spiritually alive. I have never stepped into the public role of being a spiritual teacher or a guru. But it takes a guru, generally speaking, it takes a spiritual path and some sort of involvement with a spiritual community for people to convert this integral theoretical understanding to an integral, embodied, alive, realized understanding. It’s important to see that those are both necessary unfolding stages of development in every human being’s growth. And for us to be able to have a kind of harmonious culture, we need both of those steps. We need to move from a fragmented view to an integral view—first theoretically, and then we have to find ways to embody it, to practice it, and to bring it into being.

The Endless Thrill of the Possible 

The spiritual energy that runs through my veins has always been calling me to a new expression of enlightenment—;one that is free from the timeworn shackles of the great mythic traditions, shackles that inevitably get revealed as they clash with the values of modernity and postmodernity. It is an enlightenment that by its very nature can never be content with the way things were in the past, no matter how glorious that past may have been. It is an enlightenment that can also never be content with how things are in the present moment, even at those rare instances when everything seems like it couldn’t be more perfect. It is an enlightenment that is defined by a ceaseless and ecstatic reaching forth towards an as-yet-unborn and unmanifest potential—a constant stretching towards a future perfection that will always lie just beyond one’s fingertips. My inner eye and heart is captivated by the freedom of that mysterious place between the immediacy of the present moment and the endless thrill of the possible.

Taking Absolute Responsibility 

One of the fundamental pillars of the teaching of Evolutionary Enlightenment is the individual’s willingness to take absolute responsibility for his or her own self. You don’t have to be perfect, because nobody’s perfect. Even God is not perfect, in an evolutionary context. When I use the word God, I always speak about he, she, or it as having two faces: the Unmanifest and the Manifest. In the unmanifest realm—beyond time and form—God is inherent perfection, ever unchanging and always free from the process of becoming. But from the perspective of manifestation, in the world of time and form, God is struggling to create a perfect universe—and what a chaotic process it is! The entire creative unfolding is very messy and full of errors. But the good news always is that if you step back far enough and look at the process as a whole, you can see that there is development, and that is what is so deeply positive about it. But the manifest God isn’t perfect. Why? Because he or she is still evolving. So obviously we couldn’t possibly be perfect. That is the nature of the developmental process. But if you want to be a liberated human being in a developmental context, what matters is that you, in all your imperfection, are willing to take absolute responsibility now for your own self.

Spirit Is One and Many

Spirit is generally seen and understood to be the grand unifying principle behind all apparent difference. In its revelation, there is the undeniable recognition that we have never been separate and there is only One. But the contours of that which is only One, as it becomes manifest, contain countless dimensions and levels that are not all the same. This is very important to understand. Why? Because our capacity to manifest that which is highest here on Earth—wisdom, insight, evolutionarily enlightened awareness, and deep, impersonal, spiritual love—is entirely dependent upon our being able to discern what can at times be subtle differences. Our own evolution at the deepest level of our being depends upon our willingness to strive consistently to make philosophically and morally challenging distinctions.

A Mature Spiritual Perspective

I’m convinced that a truly spiritual or enlightened perspective, especially as one matures, must include the whole world, the whole Kosmos, in every dimension. As my own perspective and interest and understanding started to expand and grow over the years, it naturally began to embrace a bigger and bigger picture. And I started to understand something very important: that there is a very clear and direct connection between the interior and the exterior, between the experience of consciousness or subjectivity and the world we are creating together. What is that connection? It is the relationship between the evolution of consciousness and the evolution of culture.

Cultures are merely shared values—the moral convictions, beliefs, and ideals that shape the way that we see the world. And we all know that different cultures share different kinds of values. People who share the same values see the world from the same perspective, and the kind of societies they create reflect those values. So we find that there is a very clear connection between the evolution of consciousness, the evolution of our interiors, and the evolution of culture itself. As consciousness evolves in and through individuals, their values also begin to develop.

When people have spiritual experiences, for example, their values can change. A very selfish person can become less selfish, and begin to care more about other people and the world. In examples like these, we can see the connection between the evolution of consciousness and the evolution of culture, between spiritual experience and practice and creating real change in the world we share. When we begin to awaken to this connection in our own lives, our understanding of spirituality expands dramatically, embracing more and more dimensions of life, of the world, and of the entire Kosmos.

Rediscovering God

Those of us who have transcended mythical belief systems know without any doubt that there is no God up in the sky. But when we awaken to what I call the evolutionary impulse—the mysterious passion to evolve, to become, to develop on every level—we rediscover who God is. When we begin to experience the aspiration to evolve as that unique ecstatic compulsion in our own heart and mind, that’s when the God who fell out of the sky is awakening within ourselves, as the urge to take the next step.

Fourteen billion years ago, there was nothing. Then, suddenly, there was an enormous explosion—an explosion that never stopped and is still reverberating here and now. So what I’m describing is a perspective and a state of consciousness in which the very first cause is waking up to itself as we wake up to our own impulse to evolve.

That’s Evolutionary Enlightenment: when the spark that initiated fourteen billion years of development becomes conscious of itself. When you realize this and recognize this at the deepest level of your being, and then choose to take responsibility for it, it is then that you know without any doubt that it’s up to you to make this world a better place. It’s up to you. In that realization, you discover a reason for living, which is spiritually empowering. It is where you will find dignity, self-respect, ultimate meaning, and purposefulness.

The New Face of God

In most forms of mysticism, to be aware of God means that one has awakened to timeless Being—to that unchanging dimension of reality that transcends the creative process. But there is also a new and emerging face of God—one that appears not through awakening to Being but through awakening to Becoming, through discovering the very energy and intelligence that initiated the creative process and that is driving it at all levels in each and every moment. When we become conscious of this evolutionary impulse, we are awakening directly to the new face of God. And this new emergence expresses itself through the human form as an awakened heart and mind that is choicelessly compelled to create the future.

A New Instinct

We human beings have regularly been faced with overwhelming crises ever since we first stood up on two legs. Survival-as an attitude, as an inner posture, as a natural reflex-is a highly developed capacity within our species. Why? Because we’ve been completely consumed by the necessity to survive for a very long time, since the first single-celled life form emerged around 3 billion years ago.

Slowly but surely, however, something new is beginning to emerge at the leading edge of the development of human consciousness-a new posture, a new attitude, a new reflex, and a new instinct. And that is the instinct to evolve, to consciously evolve. An entirely new perspective is emerging: a new orientation to life itself, based upon not merely the instinct to survive but an instinct that compels us toward higher, as yet unmanifest human potentials and possibilities. As we awaken to this evolutionary impulse, we begin to understand that Life is, in its essence, the will to exist, the urge to become, the creative spark behind the unfolding cosmos. We recognize that merely surviving is not what we are here for. Consciously and intentionally striving to evolve, individually and collectively, for the sake of the evolution of the entire creative process, is what imbues human life with a higher meaning and purpose. And what an extraordinary world we can create when we are in touch with this very best part of ourselves!

Needless to say, if we don’t find a way to overcome our collective crises and survive, then the evolution of consciousness will be a moot point. So we must survive-but not for the sake of survival alone. We must survive for the sake of our collective evolution, for the emergence of our as yet unmanifest higher potentials-those hidden treasures that we have yet to contribute to the larger life process in so many ways.

An Integral Perspective

When you realize that consciousness and culture are one-not just as a metaphysical statement, but as a literal, manifest, truth-something very profound occurs. When this perspective is internalized, when the split between subject and object, between consciousness and matter is seen through in the deepest way, a fundamentally dualistic perspective that most of us are unconsciously holding disappears. Suddenly we can no longer see the inner without seeing the outer; and we can no longer see the outer without seeing the inner. We can no longer think of the individual without thinking of the collective. This inherently holistic or integral embrace of life becomes not just a conceptual overlay, but the very way that we see. When this occurs, when we internalize this perspective, we become a new human being-one who deeply understands the process that we have been a part of since something emerged from nothing fourteen billion years ago, and who is able to see and feel connected to that larger process in every moment. That’s what I call spiritual liberation, soul liberation, in an evolutionary context. It answers our deepest existential questions about who we are and why we are here in the most profound way. And while it doesn’t remove our problems, it puts us in a position to be able to roll up our sleeves and really get down to making the world a better place, starting with ourselves. As far as I’m concerned, that’s what we’re here to do!

Fighting for Authenticity

Authenticity means freedom from pretense. The ego is a veil of pretense, a mask over the self. It’s an appearance, an image that is false and inauthentic. Authenticity is the expression of an integrated self—in whom the appearance and the reality, the motive and the action have become one seamless movement. But the capacity for authenticity is something we have to cultivate and something we have to fight for. The degree to which we are identified with ego and narcissism is the degree to which we will find authenticity emotionally unbearable. Many of us are so used to being inauthentic that it doesn’t trouble us at all. We have become numb, out of touch with our own souls. It takes guts and courage to become emotionally committed to authenticity to such an extent that if we found ourselves swerving into pretense, we would experience extreme discomfort. As our own deepest intention to evolve displaces the ego as the fundamental locus of identity, we will begin to feel a natural preference for authenticity, an attraction toward transparency and integrity. When that evolutionary impulse—which I call the Authentic Self—becomes the strongest part of who we are, the unselfconscious expression of our humanity will finally be free from pretense, free from the ego’s need to protect a false image.

Beyond Good Intentions - A New Year’s Message

I don’t have a particular New Year’s message—because the concept of the New Year doesn’t really mean anything to me! I see the passing of time as one line. So I don’t really see that there’s anything special about this particular day. For most people, the beginning of a new year means a renewing of those commitments that we feel are the most important. But to me, every single day is that day! I would hope that we would each get to that point in our own spiritual and moral development where making those commitments is something that we have already done and are always doing. And the way that we were living and the consequences of our actions would be an ongoing reflection of that fact. I think we have to get to that point—otherwise we’re living in a world of broken promises and good intentions that don’t really amount to much in the long run. So we want to evolve to such a degree that we’re always very clear about what’s most important. And then we make good on it, and we spend the rest of our life making good on it—in such a way that there is tangible, objective evidence that we have done it, and that we are continuing to do it. So I just want to encourage people to get moving—sometime around yesterday! There is no time to waste.

The Purpose of Higher-State Experiences

In the early stages of our own spiritual development, we are dependent upon the experience of euphoric states to be able to see, feel, and know that higher potentials really do exist. The bliss and ecstasy of those states temporarily breaks the deep and often unconscious shackles of postmodernity: nihilism, cynicism, narcissism, and materialism. It frees our awareness to expand in all directions, to embrace not only the outer limits but also the innermost core of our larger body, the entire Kosmos. When we share that liberating existential clarity with others, a truly enlightened perspective emerges. Together we can see and feel, directly cognize, and intuit a glorious future that is possible to create here and now, in the present moment—not as a remote ideal but as the most screamingly imminent potential imaginable.
